History of Abbey

Abbey is a brand of caravans that was originally manufactured by a company called Cosalt (yes, the static caravan manufacturer). The Grimsby based firm were looking for a new opportunity as their main business, containers, was not flourishing as well as they had hoped. The first caravan with the Abbey name on it rolled out in 1966, the Abbey Piper. The Piper was a name used by the firm for decades.

In 1992 Cosalt began concentrating on their static home range and sold off many of their caravan brands to Swift Leisure, this sale included Abbey. Swift didn’t hold back and continued to build Abbey from strength to strength in to a brand of its own. They differentiated it from the rest of their brand offerings by fitting the caravans with a strong, dent resistant GRP side panel.

Sadly, as a result of the economy in the UK at the time, Swift decided to cease production of the Abbey caravans range in an attempt to simplify their product offering. We hope to see the return of the range in the future as and when the economic climate stabilises.

Swift still support the Abbey brand today and many spares and parts for the caravans are still available from Swift through their dealer network. Most of the parts used to build Abbey’s with were also used for the Swift, Sterling & Sprite caravan ranges too so are readily available.
